It had been less than a week since they’d seen each other. Julia hadn’t, therefore, forgotten how handsome Wesley was, or his glorious smile. Nor had she forgotten that her insides went into frenzy for no apparent reason when he was near. What she had forgotten was that the intensity of that frenzy made it hard to breathe.

The way Charles had jumped out of his seat, shouting that Wesley was home, had started it all.

Then, seeing how he’d greeted Charles by hoisting him into the air, she couldn’t help but imagine what a wonderful father he’d make someday, and think how delightful it would be to be the one to rush to him and receive a hug from him. When they stood outside, not saying anything, just looking at each other, she’d had to keep her hands inside her muff for fear that she wouldn’t be able to stop them from reaching out to touch him.

Listening to her mother and Mrs. Puddicombe gushing over his handsomeness, accent, and other qualities for hours on end hadn’t helped. Their report alone would make any woman fall in love with him.

Of course Julia hadn’t fallen in love with him, but there was something happening inside her that was very real.

Giving herself a little shake, she pivoted about. “Thank you, Tony,” she told the butler.

She crossed the room and transferred the tea and other items onto the table, using the time it took to gain control over herself, before she turned into some sort of mindless ninny.

Her mother arrived, and soon they were all three sitting around the table in the study, drinking tea and eating small pieces of frosted white cake. Julia still didn’t dare meet Wesley’s gaze, afraid that her mind would go straight back to wondering about things. Including whether he would ever change his mind about getting married. It was only because the provision in her father’s will was still so unbelievable, and on her mind constantly.

“Julia, I asked you a question.”

Caught completely unaware of what her mother had asked, Julia apologized. “I’m sorry.” Swallowing the lump in her throat, she asked, “What was your question, Mother?”

“Her mind is always on horses,” Agatha said to Wesley. “She’s as bad as her father in that sense. I was telling Wesley that the house hasn’t been this full of life in a long time, don’t you agree?”

Julia recalled how Wesley had appealed to her mother to call him by his given name when they’d sat down for tea, and vice versa, but was lost as to the conversation since then. “Yes, Mother, I agree.”

“It’s the children,” Agatha continued. “They just make a house come to life. Charlie, as I call him, is such a lively child, and so eager to please. And little Emily, well, they just don’t come any sweeter. She reminds me so much of Julia when she was little.”

“I see the resemblance,” Wesley said. “It’s the blue eyes and blond hair.”

“Yes, except that even by that age,” Agatha said, “Julia was already out in the stable more than she was in the house.
